Silversmithing
Many of the skills and resources used for the designing and making of jewellery are equally valid for small scale 3D works in fine metals (and vice versa). Silversmithing is a generic name for the making of designs using a wide range of metals such as copper alloys, pewter, steel, refractory metals and of course silver.
When appropriate, other complementary materials such as wood, stone and resin will be introduced to complete the design. Ideas may evolve to create items that are purely sculptural, or provide design solutions for more practical applications such as cutlery and containers; this area can also be used to develop detailed maquettes as prototypes for larger scale designs.
Teaching is predominantly one-to-one, with some group tuition and formal demonstrations of process, aimed at developing craft skills along with design awareness. It is expected and understood that individuals have different areas of interest and ways of working.
