Aim of course
The progression route for candidates who have completed NVQ3 or the ANCF level 3 qualification at credit level or above. NPTC level 4 Higher Diploma in Floristry (HDF award) is designed to provide opportunities for candidates to demonstrate their skills and understanding of the principles and practices of commercial floristry and related subjects that may fall within the role of a senior florist / manager, freelancer and trainer within the floristry industry. Candidates must have a strong commercial background to achieve this qualification.
This course was launched in September 2006 and is awarded by City & Guilds / NPTC in connection with the Society of Floristry. All certificates will carry the Society of Floristry logo. The programme was designed to meet current trends and practices within the industry.
Course delivery
To gain the Higher Diploma candidates must pass all 10 units:
• Botanical concepts and practices for floristry
• Historical studies for floristry
• Floral event practices
• Business practices for floristry
• Marketing and promotion practices for floristry
• Design concepts for floristry
• Technical floristry skills:
tied design
wired and glued designs
designs in mediums
design trends
To join the course
Entry will be based on an interview and a current portfolio needs to be seen. All level 4 courses are demanding and require complete commitment and enthusiasm.
Assessment
The course is assessed by three cross unit assignments and two examinations - one theory and one practical. The final exams are assessed by external Society of Floristry examiners. After successful completion of the level 4 award, students may use the letter HDF after their name. Membership of the Society of Floristry at member level is also possible (MSF). The next level to consider is the level 5 NPTC Master diploma in Professional Floristry (MDPF). At this stage candidates are recognised as fully qualified professional florists.
