CYQ Fitness Instructing (Gym) Certificate Level 2
The qualification
This is a standard entry route for anyone wanting to work as an employed instructor in a gym, health and fitness club or leisure centre. The qualification is recognised with The Register of Exercise Professional at Level 2 and allows progression onto the Level 3 Personal Training qualification.
Entry requirements
Interview
There are no formal entry requirements, however, it is recommended that candidates have an interest in exercise, health and fitness, and have some experience of using a gym.
Aim of the course
This qualification recognises the skills, knowledge and competence required of an individual to work in a primarily unsupervised capacity: Planning, Instructing and Evaluating the safety and effectiveness of a gym based exercise session.
Who is the course for?
For those people who wish to enter into work in the Health and Fitness industry or those wanting to expand their own knowledge of training and fitness.

Course content
Candidates will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of the following broad areas:
1. Exercise and Fitness Knowledge covering bones and joints, muscles and muscle actions, energy systems, cardio-respiratory system, components of fitness and principles of training.
2. How to plan a safe and effective gym based session.
3. How to instruct a safe and effective gym based session.
4. How to evaluate a safe and effective gym based session.
Assessment
Candidates will be assessed in the following areas:
Level 2 Exercise & Fitness Knowledge multiple choice theory paper externally set and marked by CYQ.
Health, Safety & Professionalism in Exercise and Fitness Instruction (Externally set, internally marked worksheet).
Detailed gym based session plans (internally assessed).
Delivery of a gym based practical session (internally assessed).
Evaluation of gym based practical session (internally assessed).
Uniform & equipment required
Candidates will be required to bring appropriate sportswear and footwear for the practical elements of the course. Pens and pencils will be needed, as well as a folder to keep work in.
Code of dress
Sportswear and footwear for practical, casual clothing for theory.
