SU President has big plans
City of Bath College's new Student Union President David Lewis, 17, has big plans for the coming year, including strengthening the student community through social events and clubs. Here, we find out a bit more about David and his thoughts about college life in Bath.
You're going to be a busy man this year - will you have time for any studies?!
I'll have to - I'm studying four A-Levels: Law, Psychology, Philosophy and English Literature
So why did you decide to study at City of Bath College?
I decided to study here because after five years at school I needed a new learning environment and to meet new people. Also, the College is in a great location in the middle of the city centre and within walking distance of where I live.
What do you aim to achieve in your time as SU president?
My long-term aims include seeing alterations made to the academic timetables which would see no lessons scheduled for Wednesday afternoons in order for students to participate in social clubs and events. College life is not just about our courses; meeting new people and participating in groups and clubs are essential too. During the previous academic year too many clubs clashed with lessons. This target is part of my bigger aim to strengthen the college community.
What do you like about the College?
What I love about the college is how friendly and approachable the staff are. This goes from the student help teams and teachers and extends all the way up to the senior management. From my experience as an A-Level student, the teaching is fantastic and I love the individuality in personality shared in my fellow students. College is the place to be in order to find yourself and gain independence.
And after college, will University be your next stop?
Yes, Uni is probably what I will end up doing. I am leaning towards studying Law, Philosophy and a foreign language.
Any interesting hobbies/interests?
Sport - in particular tennis and football. I used to do athletics but my knees and hamstrings are knackered already - at 17! I am interested in nutrition and general health and well-being. When I am not at college I am either in the gym or the kitchen! I also love fashion/clothes, poetry and philosophy.
If you had the power to change one thing about Bath what would it be?
Well it would have to be the clothes shops! They are pretty mediocre! That said I am really looking forward to seeing what new shops there will be once the redevelopment project is completed. In all seriousness I think Bath is a fantastic city, there are many beautiful sights, crime rates are low compared to other parts of the country so I can't really complain.
