Performing Arts Alumni
Lucy Moore
Drama has always been my favourite subject at school, and having studied it at A Level, I wanted to do a course that was much more practical to build up my confidence and skills as a performer before trying for Drama School, and this was the perfect course! I really enjoyed my time at City of Bath College, my teachers were great and very supportive and the course was really interesting. I made some good friends, and although things could be stressful at times, I achieved more than I ever thought I could. I was given the chance to prove myself, and after ‘Alice! The Musical' my family and my friends from school have never been so proud of me after seeing me in my first main role and sing solo on stage for the first time.
After leaving College I prepared myself for a Gap Year and started job hunting, which at the moment is rather difficult. But I persisted and in September found the advertisement for a job at The Pound Arts Centre in Corsham, where I live. I used to go to the Saturday drama group there when I was 7 (which is years ago now!) and the building has recently been refurbished and reopened 2 years ago. Although the job was only part time, I figured that I had nothing to loose and part of the requirements was to have an interest in the Arts which I certainly had! I was so pleased to have been given an interview and I was over the moon when I was offered the job a few days later! I have been there nearly 2 months now and I love it! I have been doing extra hours for them already and working at least 3 days a week, not bad for a 1 day a week contract! I am in the Box Office selling tickets and other office work more than being in the café and am thoroughly enjoying it. The team I am part of are brilliant, and it is such a lovely working atmosphere, I look forward to going to work! It is really interesting to see things from the side of a Venue that book artists to perform for us. There is a variety of different performances from theatre to dance to music to children's theatre, and many more! We have film showings every 2 weeks, there are classes such as yoga, writing classes, dance classes, and the Saturday drama is still going but run by someone else. On my first day of work it was lovely to bump into my teacher Laura as she helps out with the drama group now! It was really nice to see a familiar face which calmed my nerves a bit!
I have decided to put my idea of Drama School on hold for the time being because I love this job so much already and it is opening my eyes to other kinds of jobs in the industry, ones that are much more stable than performing! I am also starting to learn to drive seeing as I finally have some money to back it! But I am going to be auditioning to join a local drama group in a few weeks time as I got talking to the director when they had a show at the Centre last week, so even if I never make it to Drama School, as long as I have a link to the theatre world I am going to be happy.
Thank you to Matt, Laura, Susie, Helen, Katie, Mark, and Luke for all their encouragement as I wouldn't have proved to myself that I can achieve great things without all your support. And also Thank you to Yvonne who taught me in my first year who told me I will be successful all I need to do is in myself, and you were right! I believed in myself and it has got me to where I am now! So if I was to pass on one thing to anyone it would be: as long as you believe in yourself, you will succeed and everything else will fall into place after it. Which it certainly has done for me.
