The Qualification
Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (6187)
Entry Requirements
No formal entry qualifications are necessary, but working in or towards gaining employment in this industry is mandatory to gain the necessary on-site evidence to satisfy the NVQ criteria.
Aim of the Course
These qualificationscover all the essential skills you need for installing and maintaining refrigeration, air-conditioning and heat pump systems. Attached to this syllabus are additional qualifications in Brazing (Level 2) and a City and Guilds 2079 F-Gas assessments. Electrical knowledge is mandatory for the course and will be provided in the syllabus during workshop and theoretical sessions.
Who is the Course for?
The course is for people working in industry without any formal HVAC qualification and for individuals who want to change vocation and work in the Craft industry. They are ideal for anyone working or wishing to work in the installation and maintenance of refrigeration, air-conditioning and heat pump systems.
Course Content
There are two qualifications available at Level 2:
Level 2 NVQ Diploma in installing and maintaining refrigeration systems
Level 2 NVQ Diploma in installing, testing and maintaining air-conditioning and heat pump systems (QCF)
These comprise of mandatory units including:
- Apply safe working practices in building services engineering working environments
- Understand how to apply scientific principles within MES
- Understand and carry out electrical work on RAC systems and components
- Install, test and maintain refrigeration systems
- Understand refrigeration system installation, testing and maintenance techniques
- Handling flourinated gases and ozone-depleting substances
- Install and commission Halocarbon 'fluorinated' refrigeration systems
- Understand Halocarbon 'fluorinated' refrigeration system installation and commissioning techniques.
Assessment
A range of first year practical assessments with external examinations every term. The second year consists of written and practical assignments in the form of a portfolio of evidence. On-site assessments are mandatory. Key skills in Application of number, Communication and I.T are mandatory for those students on this course as an apprentice.
Equipment Required
Overalls and foot protection is required. All other forms of PPE will be provided. The necessary writing equipment for theory sessions is required.
After the Course
Many students continue on to the Level 3 NVQ Certificate with four options.
FAQs
Entry on to any of the NVQ programmes are subject to interviews and induction processes to assess the suitability of the learner, and assess any basic skills deficiency that will hinder the learner's progress.
