Theoretical standpoint:
It is proper within a Foundation Course to allow for a wide variety of interpretations and procedures. The learning strategy adopted here is intended to be open ended yet provide students with a sequentially based learning programme. Projects within different subject areas are carefully staged to enable students to build on previously gained experience. In general we seek a balance between observation and expression and external reality and the realm of imagination. The elements below underpin the teaching philosophy adopted on the course.
The personal and conceptual element - representing the idea, feelings and impulses that motivate the creative act.
The technical element - concerned with the materials and processes that give form to the idea.
The visual element - dealing with the responses made to the visual world through the use of materials.
The working methodologies of art and design - which may include recording, analysis, communication and expression.
The appreciation of art and design - contemporary, historical and cross-cultural.
Assessment
Assessment is continuous with a major external assessment at the close of the summer term.
Equipment Required
A materials, books and equipment list is sent out to all new students prior to commencing the course.
After the Course
The majority of students progress directly onto Degree courses in some aspect of Art or Design, while others use the qualification as an experience in its own right.
