Course Details

The qualification

BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art and Design - Equivalent to 4 A levels

Entry requirements

4 GCSE passes, grade C or above including Art and English; or Distinction in BTEC Level 2 Diploma and grade C or above in GCSE English Language.

Aim of the course

This 36 weeks per year course, over 2 years, has been developed to introduce students to a broad study of both theory and practice of art and design. The content is intensive, challenging and varied, equipping each individual student with a creative and practical awareness of visual education.

Candidates must be at least 16 years of age, prior to entry on the programme.

Course content

The first year studies are directed towards the development of creative thinking and the acquisition of an extensive visual vocabulary including photography, ceramics, digital illustration, 3D design, printmaking, graphic design, painting, drawing, sculpture and art history.  This approach allows for a blend of diagnostic review and practical investigation, providing each student with an ability to balance an understanding of techniques, methods and use of materials with the skills to communicate effectively in a variety of formats.

In the final year, students are encouraged to build on the skills acquired in year one by developing a more individualistic approach across a range of subject specialisms.  An emphasis is placed on the individual's development in terms of post-course progression, through the provision of personal tutorials, portfolio reviews, careers advice, and Higher Education guidance.

Other important and integral elements running throughout the course include Contextual and Visual Studies.  External cultural visits both in the UK and abroad, together with a programme of visiting lecturers, specialists and practitioners in the design field, support the course content.

Assessment

There are three major assessment points throughout the academic year in the form of a student performance review.  As well as the major assessment points students are continuously assessed on a project-by-project basis receiving feedback and progress reports on a student report form.

Equipment required

Although a great deal of the materials are provided it is essential that the student is equipped with some of the basic design materials that will aid them throughout the course.  A materials and equipment list is provided to successful applicants prior to commencement.

After the course

On successful completion of the programme, students have progressed on to a diverse range of art and design related courses at leading HE Institutions at both Foundation and BA(Hons) Degree Level, in areas such as Graphic Design and Visual Communication.
