The qualification
BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Fashion and Clothing
Entry requirements
4 GCSEs of grade C or above; or GNVQ Intermediate or BTEC Level 2 Diploma at Distinction level in a relevant subject; or an equivalent qualification.
Aim of the course
To provide an introduction to the skills required to embark on a career in Fashion and /or Textiles. You will learn creative and practical skills in a studio environment supported by specialist workshops. Visual Studies and Contextual Studies are core elements of the course and continue throughout the two years. Visual Studies includes life drawing, colour theory, creative drawing and visual analysis. Contextual Studies covers contemporary and historical issues in art and design, information technology and professional practice.
Who is the course for?
The course is for students who wish to embark on the first stage of training and education for the Fashion and Textile industry.

Course content
36 weeks per year
Year 1 concentrates on skills acquisition and includes fabric printing, machine knitting, garment construction and pattern cutting. This runs alongside Design Studies covering design method, illustration and presentation techniques including digital illustration.
Year 2 focuses on directing students toward Higher Education and or industry. Students embark on a series of projects designed to apply and reinforce the skills acquired in year one and to develop self-motivation and individuality.
In addition to the core programme students will undertake AS/A2 Textiles within the context of fashion.
Assessment
There are 3 major assessment points throughout the academic year in the form of a student performance review. As well as the major assessment points students are continuously assessed on a project-by-project basis receiving feedback and progress reports. In year 2 there is an assessment in the form of a final major project; this project is internally assessed and externally sampled by the examiner.
Equipment required
You will need to provide a basic range of books and personal items of equipment. A list will be given prior to starting the course. Specialist equipment will be provided and a materials fee will be payable.
After the course
Progression to Higher Education programmes such as the Foundation Degree in Fashion and Textile Design.
