BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care
The aim of the course
This course is suitable for people wanting to work in the Health and Social Care Sector and is designed to provide learners with an introduction and overview of the sector. It provides an ideal route to health and social care career pathways. The course is equally relevant to learners of all ages.
Course content
The course is comprised of academic units and professional practice placements in health and social care settings. Units will include:
• Fundamentals of anatomy and physiology for health and social care
• Caring for children and young people
• Supporting and protecting adults
• Physiological disorders
• Equality, diversity and rights in health and social care
• Development through the life stages
• Health psychology
To join the course
Learners who have recently been in education require four GCSEs at grade C or above or a related Level 2 qualification at Merit. Those applicants wanting to join Health Sciences pathway will also need a grade C or above in GCSE Science. All students require satisfactory references and acceptance is by interview with the course leader. A clear CRB check is also required.
Course length
The course is delivered over two years and will be based on three days in College and one or two days working in health and social care settings.
Methods of study
There will be a variety of class based academic and practical learning as well as placements in a variety of health and social care settings.
Assessment
Continuous assessment by coursework and assessment of competence in practice.
Are there any extra costs?
Resources fee. You will also need to purchase a polo shirt to wear in practice and pay the cost of the CRB check. You also need to allow for the costs of travelling to and from placements and the purchase of the two recommended course texts at approximately £20 each.
Moving on to another course or career
Progression is possible to health and social care related careers and Degree programmes such as Nursing and Midwifery.
