Children's Care, Learning & Development BTEC National Diploma Level 3
This course is for learners aged 16 and over who want to work with children in a professional capacity. Successful completion of the course provides Qualified Practitioner status for the 0-8 age group. It is equally relevant to school leavers or mature learners, with or without childcare experience.
Course content
The course consists of 18 units of academic study and a minimum of 800 hours of supervised professional practice with children. Units of study include:

• Promoting Children's Development
• Reflecting on and Developing Practice for Children aged 0-8 (double unit)
• Protecting Children
• Promoting Children's Rights
• Children's Learning Activities and Play
• Promoting well being and resilience in children
• Promoting Well-being and Resilience in Children
• Diet and Nutrition for Children
• The Impact of Social Policy on Children's Care, Learning and Development
• Psychological Perspectives on Behaviour
• Managing an Early Years or Playwork Environment
• Supporting Children's Literacy Skills
• Modern Beliefs and Religions for the Early Years Practitioner
• Meeting Additional Requirements for Children's Care, Learning and Development
• The development and care of babies and children under 3 years
The qualification
BTEC National Diploma in Children's Care, Learning and Development. This is recognised to be the equivalent of 3 academic A levels. The professional practice unit also attracts UCAS points.
To join the course
A minimum of four GCSEs at grade C or above including English; or a BTEC First Diploma in Children's Care, Learning & Development at Merit; or equivalent qualifications.
All applicants will require a clear Criminal Records Bureau check. You will also need a satisfactory reference from a work experience placement.
Course length
Two years. Three days in College and two days in placement each week.
Methods of study
Classroom-based and practical experience in four different types of childcare settings.
Assessment
Coursework and assessment of competence in practice. Awarding body is Edexcel.
Are there any extra costs?
Resources fee. You will also need to purchase a polo shirt to wear in practice and pay the cost of the CRB check. You also need to allow for the costs of travelling to and from placements and the purchase of the two recommended course texts at approximately £20 each
Moving on to another course or career
Progression is possible to Undergraduate courses in Children's Education Degrees with qualified teacher status or general Childhood Studies Degrees. Career options include work in a nursery or a range of childcare settings.
