Children's Care, Learning & Development BTEC Level 2 (First Diploma)
This qualification will give you the initial knowledge, understanding and skills needed when considering entering employment in the children's care sector. You will gain grounding in the essential skills and broad fundamentals crucial to this area of study, giving you the opportunity to build on these afterwards by undertaking the Level 3 Extended Diploma, or to enter into your first job within this sector.
Course Content
The course is made up of a number of units that are completed throughout the year:
• Understanding Children's Development
• Keeping Children Safe
• Communication with Children & Adults
• Preparing & Maintaining Environments for Child Care
• Professional Development, Roles & Responsibilities in Child Care
• Supporting Children's Play & Learning
In addition to this, students also have to undertake a minimum of 300 hours on placement in a Child Care setting during the year.
Entry requirements
To join the course
You will need 4 GCSEs at grade D or above, or a Merit in the Introductory Diploma in Vocational Studies (PET). You will also have to complete a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) application at the start of the course.
Course length
One year. Three days in college / one day on placement.
Methods of study
Classroom based and practical sessions.
Assessment
There are no exams on this course. All assessment is done by coursework or practical observation. The awarding body is Edexcel.
Are there any extra costs?
Resources fee. You will also need to purchase a polo shirt to wear in practice and pay the cost of the CRB check.
Moving to another course or career
Progression to BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Children's Care, Learning & Development or look to gain employment.
