BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Travel and Tourism
The aim of the course is to provide students with a detailed introduction to the Travel and Tourism Industry, with the option of more specialised industry units in the second year. The course will prepare them either for employment in the industry or for progression to Higher Education. This 18-unit Diploma is equivalent to three A-levels. Teaching staff will help students choose the most suitable qualification for them at interview and induction.
Course content
The Diploma course consists of 18 units, including:
• Investigating the Travel and Tourism Sector
• The UK as a destination
• European and long haul travel destinations
• Customer service
• Cruising
• Holiday representatives
• Special interest tourism
• Entertainment for the holidaymakers
To join the course
Four GCSEs at C or above, including Maths and English language, or the BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Travel and Tourism at Merit level. Satisfactory references are also required.
Course length
Two years
Methods of study
PowerPoint presentations, group work, role-plays field and residential trips, independent research, guest speakers and teacher-led sessions.
Assessment
Coursework/assignments, presentations and role-plays.
Are there any extra costs?
College fee plus a minimum of one uniform shirt that needs to be purchased. These shirts will be worn one day per week.
Combines well with
Business Studies, A-level Geography, a modern foreign language.
Moving on to another course or career
Entry into the Tourism Industry in a number of sectors, including Retail Travel Agents, Tour Operating, Overseas ‘Repping', working at an airport and many more. Students that have achieved the Diploma may progress to Higher Education where there are many excellent travel and tourism courses to equip you for fast track management programmes with some of the larger travel and tourism suppliers, or for working overseas in a developmental capacity. You may also wish to progress onto our new Foundation Degree in Heritage Management - delivered in collaboration with Bath Spa University (see our Undergraduate Prospectus for details).
