University of Bath Foundation Year
Access to University
The City of Bath College has been running the renowned University of Bath Foundation Year programme since it began in 1998. The Foundation Year provides students with an opportunity to progress to the first year of specific undergraduate degree courses at the University of Bath. Successful students are guaranteed automatic progression onto a range of undegraduate degrees at the University of Bath as follows: Accounting and Finance, Biology, Biochemistry, Business Administration, Chemical/Biochemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Economics, Education, Electronic and Electrical Engineering, Health, International Development, Mathematical Sciences, Mechanical Engineering, Medical Engineering, European Studies and Modern Languages, Natural Sciences, Pharmacy and Pharmacology, Physics, Psychology, Social Sciences and Sports Engineering.
The course also provides an appropriate academic background for degree entry at other UK institutions. Each year students on the Foundation Year have progressed to UK higher education degree courses at universities across the country.

Choice of subject routes
The foundation course is a modular programme divided into two 15 week semesters. The course includes lectures, tutorials and laboratory work if appropriate. Students will follow one of two possible pathways: Science, Technology or Business (including social sciences).
A combination of the following subjects can be studied during the foundation year (maximum of three):
- Biology
- Business
- Chemistry
- Economics
- English for specific purposes
- Mathematics
- Physics
- Social Science
During the course you will develop the skills to succeed in your chosen degree course. This will include courses in Information Technology.

Assessment
Each unit is assessed through a combination of coursework (including essays, reports and laboratory tests) and end of unit examination. The standard is equivalent to A-Level and students have to achieve specific grades which are determined by the University of Bath, in order to progress to their choice of degree at the University of Bath.

Foundation Year at City of Bath College
Joining the Foundation Year at City of Bath College offers many advantages:

Scholarships
Every year City of Bath College offers 4 scholarships worth £1,000 each which is awarded as a reduction in tuition fees. Of these, three are awarded to international students and one is awarded to a home/EU student.
The awards are given to prospective students who have demonstrated academic excellence. All applicants are given automatic consideration as part of the application process.
You may receive one of these scholarships in addition to other scholarships or grants, as long as the total does not exceed the course fee.
Foundation Year Scholarship Award Ceremony 2008/09
The four students who were chosen as the 2008/09 award winners are: Malek El-Qallali, Hiro Komaki, Liza Ordonez and Andrej Rysev.
All four students are looking forward to progressing to the University of Bath for their undergraduate degree programmes. Their target degree courses span a range of options: Malek, who is from Libya, intends to study Electronics and Communication Engineering. Hiro, from Japan, is planning to study Mathematics. Liza, from Colombia, has her sights on a degree in International Management and Modern Languages and Andrej, who is from Lithuania, is planning to study Economics.
The event was held in the Shrubbery Restaurant at City of Bath College, attended by the four students, their numerous friends, proud teachers and tutor, the Programme Year Manager from the University and the College Principal.
The students were presented with a certificate by the Principal to mark their outstanding achievements and to congratulate them on their successes.
This year's award ceremony was doubly significant as it also marked the 10th year of this successful course. By providing students with a one-year programme enabling them direct entry to the University of Bath, subject to achieving the required grades on the course, the Foundation Year is a highly attractive option for international learners aiming to study at one of the UK's prestigious universities.
University of Bath International Scholarships
The University of Bath International Office has allocated two of their undergraduate scholarships to two progressing international Foundation Year students.
This fantastic opportunity will enable two of the successful students, progressing to their target degree at Bath, to receive £2500 per year of their degree programme up to four years of study at the University.
These scholarships are awarded on entry to the degree programme on the basis of excellent academic performance during the Foundation Year.
