This programme is designed to enable you to explore the art of bookbinding. Learn to make your own sketch books and journals or bind your work in the form of an artist's book. The course will equip you with the knowledge of how to make books and boxes in the traditional way, as well as exploring more decorative and modern binding styles. Book repair will also be covered on cloth backed books.
During the term, we will cover a hand sewn hard back book, a slipcase, different exposed spine bindings and book repair techniques. All work is practical from the outset.
Most equipment and materials for use in class are supplied. However, usually students will start to purchase their own equipment to pursue the craft at home. You will be required to bring some decorative papers, such as wrapping paper, to class to include with bookcloth in the covering process.
Your tutor, Sarah
Rowlands, retrained as a bookbinder after 10 year career in Graphic Design and
has taught Bookbinding at Bath Spa University for the past 15 years.
