Jenny Chen
Education & Development Manager
Royal United Hospital NHS Trust
Waiting lists are a fact of life for NHS patients – but now the staff of a hospital in Bath are having to join one, too.
The reason for the queue is the popularity of training courses offered to staff of the Royal United Hospital NHS Trust by City Of Bath College.
Jenny Chen, the trust’s Education & Development Manager, says the demand for training is a tribute to the way the College delivers it.
“The initial reaction to the idea of training was cautious,” she says. “But the College really sold the benefits and we did, too.
“Once we started getting people through, our staff trusted the College and knew they would be there to support them.
“The feedback from staff is that the people delivering the training are very supportive.
“It’s filled a gap which makes them feel more involved. They know there is training available to them and their managers are willing to encourage them.
“The professional staff have to have training but staff in Bands 1 to 4 have often had little before.”
She says the training initiative is making her life easier as people who would never have had training before are embracing it and seeing the effects in their working lives.
“It’s given them confidence. It’s opening doors for them so they can have a career pathway.
“Customer care is very important to the trust and is part of our objectives. It’s supported from the top and all the way through. Our Chief Executive has signed the Skills Pledge to give us support.”
Jenny praises the College for its close liaison with the trust and its willingness to come to the hospital for vocational training.
“It’s been a very good experience. We have eight staff going on a six-month part-time Introduction to Leadership & Management, we’ve put quite a few through Business Administration Level 2 and 3, and two have even won Train To Gain Trainee Of The Year awards.
“And now we’ve had to start a waiting list for the business administration courses.”
City Of Bath College has also helped with ad hoc courses including minute-taking, customer care, and telephone skills.

I would describe the approach of the City of Bath College as low key, non intrusive and professional. To date all time scales have been met, pre arranged meetings held on time and attended by relevant staff from the College. Enquiries and questions to the College are dealt with promptly.
The NVQ courses being delivered through the College are progressing well and have enough flexibility built in not to disrupt our operation. This I believe is a credit to the selection process used by the College to identify a suitable provider of the training. On the whole our experience as an employer working with the City of Bath College has been very good, to such a degree that we intend to deliver more training to further groups of employees in partnership with the College.
