Design student wins major regional competition
A digital design student from City of Bath College has won a competition to create a new brand for Devon Museums, a group which represents all the museums in the county.
Mat Gartside, 21, from Bath, beat off competition from designers across the South West to land the award.
His new logo and branding can now be seen across Devon, advertising numerous different exhibitions and displays at the county's museums.
Mat, who is studying the Foundation Degree in Digital Design, which is run at the College in partnership with Bath Spa University, said: "I had to design a new corporate identity which would appeal to people whether they were young or old.
"I had to come up with a new logo, colour palette and typeface which Devon Museums could use on all their materials and publicity.
"My idea was based around the idea of a network. The design is quite minimalist and I used a classic typeface but when I saw it coming together I just knew it worked.
"I was pleased with the design and hoped that I was in with a chance of winning, but when I got the email telling me I'd won I couldn't believe it.
"The judges told me they thought the design was of the kind of quality you could expect from a London studio and that was a great thing to hear."
Mat won an iPod nano and £50 of iTunes vouchers, but said the prizes were not his main reason for entering the competition.
"The prizes are great, but I entered for the experience and to make some contacts within the industry, which I've done," he said.
"To have won a competition like this is also a great achievement to have on your CV and I'm hoping it will help me in the future when I'm looking for work in the industry."
Mat said he had enjoyed the Foundation Degree course at the College.
"I've learnt so much. The tutors have been great and we've had some excellent guest lecturers who I've learnt a lot from.
"We were told by one guest lecturer how important presentation is when you are submitting your design to a client and that's something that I kept in mind when I entered this competition.
"I've enjoyed the course very much and hope to go on to Bath Spa University to do the BA once I've finished the Foundation Degree."
The Devon Museums Group is an independent, non-profit making organisation supported by Devon County Council. The group represents all the museums in the county and offers support to smaller and voluntary-run museums.
