Foundation Degree Business with Management* in partnership with University of the West of England
The Foundation Degree in Business with Management, in partnership with University of the West of England, balances intellectual and practical
skills and requires students to relate learning to the workplace. The programme places
emphasis on the development of knowledge and skills to meet the growing demands
and needs of business, such as the study of organisations, their management and the
changing external environments in which they operate, the identification and analysis
of business problems, evaluation of alternative solutions and the undertaking of research
in a constantly changing business context. There is also a key emphasis on work-based
learning which features throughout the programme.

Course Structure
A total of 14 modules will be completed over the two years as follows:
Level 1:
• Business environment

• Financial information and decision making

Full time students: Level 1 equates to year 1 and Level 2 equates to year 2.
Part time students: Level 1 will be completed in 1½ years and Level 2 in the following 1½
years.
Methods of Study and Assessment
Progress is measured through a series of assignments and examinations. These are
developed to test students' ability to integrate concepts, theories and practice; ascertain
their learning strengths and weaknesses and continuing development needs; and to
expose students to a variety of assessment methods in order to promote the growth of
their lifelong learning skills.
Progression Opportunities
Although the Foundation Degree is a stand-alone (career-related) qualification in its
own right, students successfully completing this course may be eligible to progress
to the third year of an appropriate Honours Degree at the University of the West of
England, subject to a place being available; for example, the BA (Honours) Business
Studies or BSc (Honours) Management. While the university is committed to enabling
Foundation Degree students to progress, in the event of there being insufficient places to
accommodate all students who have applied, applicants will be subject to a selection
process which will be based on achievement during the Foundation Degree. Students
are also able to apply to other institutions (through UCAS) for entry onto second or third
year of other related degree programmes.
Employability
A Foundation Degree in Business is an ideal preparation for a career in business and
management. In addition the course has been developed in response to the needs of
local employers to meet the current and future skill needs of business.
Entry Requirements
• GCSE or equivalent in mathematics and English (Grade C or higher) and 80 - 120
UCAS tariff points in any subject or A-levels: 80 tariff points
• Level 3 qualification, e.g. BTEC National Award/Certificate/Diploma in Business NVQ
• NVQ Level 3 in Accounting, Management or Business Administration
• International Baccalaureate: IB: 12 points or above
Applicants without formal academic qualifications who are able to demonstrate at
least two years' experience of working in an accounting, administrative or management
role with an employer at a supervisory level (NVQ Level 3) or above may be able to
join the programme if they have undertaken an interview and can provide evidence
from the workplace to support their application. This may include the completion of an
assignment. If English is not the student's first language, test results such as IELTS 6.0, TOEFL
570 (or 230 if computer test), NEAB or Cambridge proficiency grade C are required.
