HNC Business with Management for International Students
This Higher National Certificate is specifically designed to meet the needs of international
students wishing to study Business with Management at City of Bath College. As well as
studying business, the programme provides for the development of English language skills
as an integral feature. There is an opportunity to develop a range of skills, techniques,
personal qualities and attributes which are essential for operating successfully in a
business context. An objective of the programme is to equip students to make positive
contributions to their employment as well as providing flexibility, knowledge, skills and
motivation as a basis for future studies and career development. This course will provide
learners with understanding across a wide range of business areas including a particular
emphasis on management. A key feature of the programme is the support from a
dedicated personal tutor available to all students, who will guide individuals through
various aspects of study, such as assistance in planning your workload, advice on
research and guidance on study skills.
Course Structure
To successfully complete the programme you will need to achieve a total of eight units
over one year, as detailed below:
• Business environment
• Managing financial resources and decisions
• Organisations and behaviour
• Marketing principles
• Business strategy
• Human resource management
• Advertising and promotion in business
• Research project / work-based experience (to be confirmed)
Methods of Study and Assessment
Your progress through the course will be assessed through a series of written assignments
and oral presentations. Support to help you prepare for these assignments will be
offered as part of the programme. Assignment-based study is an important part of this
course and will require good communication and number skills, as well as the ability to
carry out independent research. The course will be delivered using a blend of teaching
and learning methods and will include lectures, group activities, written tasks, personal
research and tutorials.
Extra Information
You will be required to purchase the recommended text books. The programme of study
starts in September of each academic year.
Progression Opportunities
Following completion of the HNC, your next step could be a HND progressing onto a
degree such as the BA (Honours) Business Management offered in collaboration with
University of the West of England.
Entry Requirements
The course is suitable for students who have the appropriate academic background. The
Admissions team are very familiar with international qualifications and each application is
individually assessed. For mature candidates, appropriate work experience is considered.
Regarding English language requirements, students will be expected to have achieved
one of the following or equivalent:
• IELTS: 5.5
• GCSE/IGCSE Grade C
• TOEFL: 80 (internet-based), 550 (paper-based), 213 (computer-based)
Students who do not meet the English language entry requirements but have an IELTS
score of 5.0 or equivalent will need to take an English language pre-sessional course at
the College.
