Construction and Engineering
BTEC Level 4 HNC Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment (Building Services Engineering)
This part-time programme is for people who are already employed, or seeking employment, in the broad area of the Construction Industry. The Higher National Certificate develops skills and knowledge to suit a range of careers in the industry.
The aims of the course
- Prepare students for a range of technical, professional and management careers in building services engineering by providing units which are relevant to the discipline in which they are either currently working or seeking employment
- Provide an environment where students will be able to enhance their knowledge in building services engineering
- Offer students and employers a qualification in building services engineering with recognisable national standards
- Provide students with the knowledge and skills required to make an immediate or improved contribution to employment in building services engineering
- Provide students with the knowledge, skills and qualifications required as a basic for progression to the Level 5 HND or other related undergraduate programmes of study.
Course structure
The course is available as three separate pathways, HVAC, Refrigeration and Electrical.
Each pathway consists of eight units, six common units (four core and two specialist units). There are also two additional units, studied in year two, for students who may wish to progress to the BTEC Level 5 Higher National Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment.
(Building Services Engineering)
Year One (Common Units):
Design principles and application for construction and the built environment (core),
Application of scientific principles to building services engineering (core),
Health, safety and welfare for construction and the built environment (core),
Applied mathematics for construction and the built environment.
Year One (Specialist Units):
Piped distribution services for non-domestic buildings (HVAC and Refrigeration),
Electrical installation for building services engineering (Electrical).
Year Two (Common Units):
Group project in the construction industry (core),
Building management systems for building services engineering.
Year Two (Specialist Units):
Thermo-fluids and acoustic criteria for building services engineering (HVAC),
Refrigeration technology for construction and the built environment (Refrigeration),
Power supplies for building services engineering (Electrical).
Year Two (Additional Specialist Units):
Air conditioning for industrial and commercial buildings (HVAC and Refrigeration),
Low pressure hot water heating for non-domestic buildings (HVAC),
Air conditioning for complex industrial and commercial buildings (Refrigeration),
Electrical and electronic control principles for building services engineering (Electrical),
Lighting applications for industrial and commercial buildings (Electrical).
Methods of study and assessmenE
Your work and progress is assessed by a range of methods, which may include assignments, projects, case studies, practical exercises and examinations.
Where possible, employers may be involved with project work and some other assessments to help ensure that course content is up to date and relevant.
The basic requirements are a scientific calculator and drawing equipment. Access to drawing studios, equipment and computers is provided.
Progression opportunities
Holders of the BTEC Level 4 Higher National Certificate may be encouraged to continue their part-time studies on the BTEC Level 5 Higher National Diploma. In some cases they may be able to gain admission to degree courses.
Entry requirements
Generally, students should be at least 18 and have either:
• a BTEC National Certificate or Diploma in a relevant subject
• at least one A-level and four or more appropriate GCSEs at grade C or above.
Mature students wishing to study Higher National courses will be assessed with an entry exam at interview. We may also admit students on the strength of other qualifications or experience.
