Construction and Engineering
BTEC Level 4 HNC in Construction and the Built Environment (Construction)
This part-time programme is for people who are already employed, or seeking employment, in the broad area of the Construction Industry. The Higher National Certificate develops skills and knowledge to suit a range of careers and disciplines in the industry.The aims of the course are to:
• Prepare students for a range of technical, professional and management careers in construction by providing units which are relevant to the professions in which they are currently working, or in which they intend to seek employment
• Enable students to make a contribution in employment
• Provide students with flexibility, knowledge, skills and motivation as a basis for progression
• Develop a range of skills and techniques, personal qualities and attitudes essential for successful performance in working life
• Provide a significant education base for progression to membership of professional institutions.
Course Structure
The course contains the following units:
Year One:
Health, Safety and Welfare, Technology and Maintenance, Design Principles and Application, Applied Mathematics, Law and Contract.
Year Two:
Technology ‘B', Group Project, Science and Materials for Construction and the Built Environment, Contractual Procedures, Management Principles and Application. As part of the course students will develop higher level skills which are common to all areas of study.
Methods of Study and Assessment
Your work and progress is assessed by a range of methods, which may include assignments, projects, case studies, practical exercises and examinations. Where possible, employers may be involved with project work and some other assessments, to help ensure that course content is up to date and relevant.
Extra Information
A design / construction-based course, the basic requirements are a scientific calculator and drawing equipment. Access to drawing studios, equipment and computers is provided.
Progression Opportunities
Students taking the Higher National Certificate may already be working in either:
• Building contracting
• Architecture
• Engineering
• Building surveying
• Quantity surveying
Holders of the BTEC Level 4 Higher National Certificate may be encouraged to continue their part-time studies on the BTEC Level 5 Higher National Diploma. In some cases they may be able to gain admission to degree courses.
Entry Requirements
Generally, students should be at least 18 and have either:
• A BTEC National Certificate or Diploma in a relevant subject
• At least one A-level and four or more appropriate GCSEs at grade C or above
Mature students wishing to study Higher National courses will be assessed with an entry exam at interview. We may also admit students on the strength of other qualifications or experience.
