BTEC Level 5 HND Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment (Building Services Engineering)
This part-time programme is for people who are already employed, or seekingemployment, in the broad area of the Construction Industry. The Higher National Diploma
develops skills and knowledge to suit a range of careers in the industry.
The aims of the course are to:
• Prepare students for a range of technical, professional and management careers
in building services engineering by providing units which are relevant to the discipline in
which they are either currently working or seeking employment
• Provide an environment where students will be able to enhance their knowledge in
building services engineering
• Offer students and employers a qualification in building services engineering with
recognisable national standards
• Provide students with the knowledge and skills required to make an immediate or
improved contribution to employment in building services engineering
• Provide students with the knowledge, skills and qualifications required for
progression to a related Undergraduate programme of study
• Prepare students for higher academic achievements and future career
development
• Provide students with the educational requirements that will make them
acceptable for membership of professional bodies in Building Services Engineering.
Course Structure
The course is available as three separate pathways, HVAC, Refrigeration and Electrical.
Each pathway consists of 16 units, 11 common units (10 core and six specialist units).
Year One (Common Units):
Design principles & application for construction and the built environment (core),
Application of scientific principles to building services engineering (core), Health, safety
& welfare for construction and the built environment (core), Applied mathematics for
construction and the built environment.
Year One (Specialist Units):
Piped Distribution Services for Non-Domestic Buildings (HVAC &
Refrigeration); Electrical Installation for Building Services Engineering (Electrical).
Year Two (Common Units):
Group project in the Construction Industry (core), Building management systems for
building services engineering.
Year Two (Specialist Units):
Thermo-fluids & acoustic criteria for building services engineering (HVAC), Refrigeration
technology for construction and the built environment (refrigeration), Power supplies for
building services engineering (electrical), Air conditioning for industrial & commercial
buildings (HVAC & refrigeration), Low pressure hot water heating for non-domestic
buildings (HVAC), Air conditioning for complex industrial & commercial buildings
(refrigeration), electrical & electronic control principles for building services engineering
(electrical), Lighting applications for industrial & commercial buildings (electrical).
Year Three (Common Units):
Management principles & application for construction and the built environment (core),
Project management for building services engineering (core), Applied mathematics for
complex engineering problems (core), Energy utilisation & efficiency for building services
engineering, Research project (core).
Year Three (Specialist Units):
Heating systems for industrial & specialist applications (HVAC), Refrigeration design
for construction and the built environment (refrigeration), Electrical protection &
transportation installations for non-domestic buildings (electrical).
Methods of Study and Assessment
Your work and progress is assessed by a range of methods, which may include
assignments, projects, case studies, practical exercises and examinations. Where
possible, employers may be involved with project work and some other assessments to
help ensure that course content is up-to-date and relevant.
The basic requirements are a scientific calculator and drawing equipment. Access to
drawing studios, equipment and computers is provided.
Progression Opportunities
Students successfully completing this HND may be able to enter the second year of a fulltime
or sandwich degree course in a related subject.
Entry Requirements
Generally, students should be at least 18 and have either:
• A BTEC National Certificate or Diploma in a relevant subject
• At least one A-level and four or more appropriate GCSEs at grade C or above
Mature students wishing to study Higher National courses will be assessed with an entry
exam at interview. We may also admit students on the strength of other qualifications or
experience.
