BSc (Hons) Sport (Work-based Learning) in partnership with University of Bath
Two pathways:• Coaching
• Health & Fitness
Both of these exciting programmes are exclusively designed as a full Honours Degree top-up for those students who have already completed the associated Foundation Degree in Sport Coaching or Health & Fitness.
These courses aim to significantly enhance opportunities to gain meaningful employment in coaching, health & fitness or other sportsrelated fields. They may also allow you to progress onto a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE).
On successful completion of this programme, you will receive your award from the University of Bath.
Course Structure
These University of Bath Honours Degree courses are delivered entirely at City of Bath College and consist of:
• Common research-based project curriculum (40% of the course)
• Research methods: six credits, 10%
• Work-based research project: 18 credits, 30%
These modules are designed to encourage students to reach a high standard on a workrelated topic of their choice, agreed with the teaching staff (and employers). As the project is work-based there will be regular input from the employer and supervision by
College staff.
• Common professional skills curriculum (20% of the course)
Students study four (three credit, 5%) modules that cover a number of management areas, such as: marketing activities, managing information & quality, managing performance, managing financial & non-financial resources.
• Two option pathways (40% of the course):
The Coaching pathway covers modules on the professional coach, coaching cultures and philosophies, coaching organisations, initiatives & PE.
The Health & Fitness pathway modules are: exercise-induced injuries, lifestyle & exercise management for special populations, physical activity, diet & disease, kinesiology of exercise & physical activity.
These pathway specific modules build on the skills and knowledge gained in the Foundation Degree and develop the students' ability to study at Honours level.
Methods of Study
Full-time over one year, split into two semesters. The timetable of contact time is primarily two days per week. However, you are expected to do extensive research and independent study outside of timetabled lectures.
You will cover theoretical elements of the course in classrooms at the College, with practical application at Bath Sports Centre or the University of Bath Sports Training Village, and our own fitness gym, where appropriate.
Assessment
In addition to a significant work-based project report, a wide range of assignments will be set throughout the year and may include some formal examinations.
Extra Information
Alongside this course there will be opportunities to gain nationally recognised / industry standard qualifications in your chosen field, which will incur additional costs, but will enhance your work-based experiences and future employment prospects. University of Bath sports kit can be purchased at induction.
Progression Opportunities
Successful graduation from this programme may enable you to progress onto a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) or other Postgraduate study - subject to final degree classification.
Employability
As a graduate you will have greatly enhanced employment prospects in coaching, health & fitness, or other sports-related fields.
Entry Requirements
You will need to have achieved a minimum overall pass percentage of 55% on your chosen Foundation Degree pathway - Coaching or Health & Fitness. Students achieving 53% or 54% may be eligible for interview (with the programme leader and Higher Education manager) and would need to be successful in order to be accepted onto the programme.
There is no external entry onto this programme.
