These exciting programmes (recently revised to further improve their vocational relevance) aim to equip students with vocational and academic skills that will ensure smooth transition into their chosen field of employment.
In addition, they provide access onto our one-year BSc (Hons) degree programmes in Coaching and Health & Fitness.
Access onto other relevant Honours Degree programmes nationally is also possible (year two entry in many cases). It is also ideally suited to people already working in the Sports Coaching or Health & Fitness industry who wish to develop both academically and
professionally.

Course Structure
30% of the course consists of generic study skills and work-based topics, with the remaining 70% specific to each pathway. This provides students with the skills necessary for higher level study, prepares them for employment in their chosen field and develops their skills in
coaching or health & fitness.
Common Curriculum
Year one: Introduction to HE study skills, Application of HE study in the workplace.
Year two: Developing professional skills, Introduction to research methods.
Years one and two: Work-based learning (assessed and reported on in year two). This module and the associated work placement form an integral part of the programme.
Coaching Pathway
Subjects studied include: sports development, introduction to coaching, safety & injury, coaching special populations, anatomy, nutrition, intermediate & advanced sports coaching, analysis of performance, sociological perspectives of coaching, sports psychology.
Health & Fitness Pathway
Subjects studied include: sport & fitness development, nutrition & lifestyle, management skills, gym & fitness instruction, anatomy, exercise & fitness knowledge, ethical practice, health & fitness promotion, health & exercise psychology, health & fitness for special
populations.
Methods of Study and Assessment
Full-time over two years, with each year split into two semesters. The timetable of contact time is primarily two days per week. However, you are expected to do extensive research and independent study outside of timetabled lectures.
A wide range of assessments are used and may include some formal examinations.
You will cover theoretical elements of the course in classrooms at the College, with practical application at Bath Sports Centre or the University of Bath Sports Training Village, and our own fitness gym.
Extra Information
Alongside this course there will be opportunities to gain nationally recognised / industry standard qualifications in your chosen field, which will incur additional costs, but will enhance your work-based experiences and future employment prospects. University of Bath sports kit can be purchased at induction.
Progression Opportunities
Although the Foundation Degree is a stand-alone (career-related) qualification in its own right, students successfully completing this course may be eligible to progress onto the associated BSc (Hons) year programme in Coaching or Health & Fitness - depending on
your overall pass percentage. Students may also be able to apply to other institutions (through UCAS) for entry onto 2nd or 3rd year of other degree programmes.
Entry Requirements
Applications are welcomed from candidates:
• With a Level 3 qualification such as a National Award / Certificate / Diploma, Progression / Advanced Diploma, GCE A -evel, Access to Higher Education Course, or a work-based course such as NVQ 3 or Advanced Apprenticeship.
Where these qualifications are recognised on the UCAS tariff, candidates should normally have achieved a minimum tariff of 120 points.*
* For the Progression / Advanced Diploma, 120 UCAS tariff points must be gained from the principal learning element of the qualification.
• Without formal qualifications, but who have a minimum of two years' relevant work experience and are able to demonstrate that they have developed the necessary skills to succeed on the course.
All applicants will normally also require at least four GCSE passes (at grade C or above), including maths and English or their Level 2 equivalents. All students must have Criminal Records Bureau enhanced clearance and absence of offences which would preclude practice for this programme. Applications may be subject to interview
Where English is not the applicant's first language an IELTS score of 6.0 or TOEFL score of 580 (paper-based) or 237 (computer-based) or equivalent qualification, will normally be required.
